It could be my low expectations but I completely enjoyed myself in a movie that I feel like I shouldn’t have. If you weren’t jumping out of your skin it was preparing you to do so. The first movie had a lot of dead space on the screen and this one utilizes every second to propell you into a new scare or jump. With each startling scare I became more entranced by the simple Faustian tale that stretched on. I have to say that I really enjoyed this. However, PA2 still maintains its “realism” through the seasoned cast that makes us feel for them. This added to the realism and made it convincing that this was real. Part of the only thing that worked in the first movie was that the actors were unknown and essentially playing themselves. You might remember Kristi, played by Sprague Grayden, from Jericho and Sons of Anarchy and Daniel Rey, played by Brian Boland, from 2009’s Unborn. Another difference between the two is that the cast, with the exception of cameos by Katie and Micah of PA, is populated with actual actors. I feel that it makes it more ominious and terrifying to contend with. As always, I’m a fan of not seeing the creature, demon, evil, that is stalking it’s prey. I appreciated the slow build of tension that is often missing in today’s slasher flicks that serve to gross us out rather than really scare us. There are a lot of departures from the first film, one being that in that everything PA failed to achieve was used successfully in this one. What she finds is more startling than the haunting itself but will it be too late to save her family. Her part in the movie is that of believer, she sees what her parents don’t and don’t want to see, and digs deeper to find the truth. Ali Rey, the stepdaughter, is not convinced when Kristi relays this to her. When Kristi informs Katie of the strange happenings Katie immediately puts down the conversation insisting that if they don’t talk about it, if they ignore it, it’ll go away. A demon seemed to torture them into their teen years and drove their mother crazy. As things begin to get weird it’s revealed that Kristi and her sister Katie (from the first film) experienced paranormal occurances when they were young. We get the same headers as we did before, Night 1, Night 2, Night 3 and these guide us through the experience of the family. This is where things begin to get interesting. Not to panic though, a security crew arrives the next day and installs security cameras to surround the inside and outside of the home. Everything in the house is in a disarray but nothing is missing. Not too long after they settle in, they are confronted by what seems to be a break in. The family is a blended one, although with the casting you wouldn’t have known, with Kristi Rey being the new stepmother. I hadn’t yet seen the first one at the time and as I discovered during the film it’s not entirely needed in order to see the second one.Īs we begin we see the Rey family bringing home a bouncing baby boy, caught on handycam. So, it was a completely random decision for me to decide to review this movie. I enjoy them for the most part, but could always do without them if another suitable movie selection is available. I don’t love them, but I appreciate the genre and what it does to the human psyche. Then sometime around January of this year we get the news that PA will have a sequel and thus PA2 was born. So, after raking in millions due to the undeserved hype, PA went it’s own way in horror history and disappeared, seemingly never to have been heard of again. While it had its moments PA wasn’t exactly all we thought it would be. Then of course the producers asked us to demand it! Demand that your local theaters show this movie! And so we did and what did we get? An annoying couple poking a proverbial stick at a demon and a lot of dead air scenes. Last year we all remember seeing the trailers running across our screens for Paranormal Activity touting it as the scariest movie ever whilst showing us jumping and shrieking audiences. With low expectations comes a fantastic sequel.
